Trapped Nerves

Have you recently woken up one morning with an incredibly stiff neck, back or shoulder? You may be suffering from a “trapped nerve” or ‘subluxation’. Nerves go everywhere throughout your body and control everything; every movement, sensation, thought and emotion by linking your brain to your body. Your brain sends and receives messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves between each vertebra to the whole body.

A trapped nerve is caused by two things: a big trauma like a car crash or falling down stairs, and more commonly, small repetitive traumas, like poor posture and stress, which are the main case of a trapped nerve. You may experience neck or lower back pain and stiffness along with a radiating pain, numbness, tingling and weakness down your arm, forearm, fingers, thigh, buttock, feet or legs.

When these little traumas happen to the spine the vertebrae that are designed to move freely can stiffen up. When a joint in the spine does not work properly then it can irritate the nerve next to it. Although this process is much more complicated a “trapped nerve” involves radiculopathy or neuritis. Radiculopathy is a problem in which one or more nerves do not work properly, resulting in pain, weakness, numbness, or poor muscular control. Neuritis is inflammation of a nerve accompanied by pain and sometimes loss of function.

There are some things you can do to get relief from a trapped nerve: applying an ice pack, stretching, massaging, or longer term, changing your work set up or stressful situation but best of all is to consult David Canevaro.

David has extensive experience and expertise in osteopathic treatments for trapped nerves. He will be able to assess you and diagnose the exact location of the nerve irritation but if the cause cannot be established, he may refer you to have an x-ray, ultrasound or MRI scan performed.

Once a diagnosis has been made, David will devise a personalised treatment plan that will not only address the root cause to prevent the injury reoccurring, but will also use gentle, safe and effective osteopathic techniques for relieving the tension and irritation.
